Spell checking Myanmar text in LibreOffice

In a previous post on wordprocessing Myanamar text with LibreOffice, I showed how you could have the UI (user interface) with Myanmar language. Now I found out that you could also check spelling of Myanmar text. For that you need to install the Myanmar dictionary extension provided by LibreOffice.

Finding, downloading and installing the Myanmar dictionary

Let’s start with opening the text of the short article on NLP that I showed in my earlier post that I mentioned.

I am using the English user interface here, because it will be easier for me and you to follow the Menus.
If you click Tools/Spelling/Options/Get more dictionaries online as shown below, you’ll get to the dictionary extension download page.

Now if you type Burmese or Myanmar you’ll find the required dictionary. Then you can download it and install it as instructed on the download page.

Trying out spell checking

After installing the Myanmar dictionary you can go on to check the spelling by clicking Spelling on the Tools menu. I find spell checking of Myanmar text is not reliable as yet. One problem is that the checking was done in the style of English words. That is, the spell checker look for spaces to delimit the text as “word”. But the actuat text uses space to delimit phrases. I guess it will need quite a lot of work to overcome such problems. May be our young (or old) NLP enthusiasts would like to try their hands.
